KILLER gravy here. The way I used to make it for my friends back in Kentucky. You can take this gravy and smother one of their Dagwood sandwiches, like I did today, and Lord have mercy! It's gooooood! This little diner and take-out joint has been around since the 1930's. It is a little piece of Americana. I'm going back for biscuits and gravy soon. This place is dangerous! ;-)

I LOVE Dagwoods and have been eating there since I was old enough to chew. The Dagwood sandwich is by far my favorite, especially when I'm nursing a hangover. Service is always great and food is always good. I just wish they were able to add on because it's soooo small. I usually order to go on the weekends. The actual building is run down but it doesn't change the fact that their good is awesome. It's like home cooking with out all the work :)

We had great food for this simple, but old school decor. I ate he opened faced, roast beef sandwich w/mashed potatoes & gravy! Yum!!! Others in our party ate a yummy hamburger steak sandwich & a bbq w/grilled onions hamburger. All plates were super cheap & tasty.

I like a good little home style diner on occasion. Dagwood's fits this bill. Heading out of town I decided to stop and grab a sandwich. After checking the menu I decided to give the BLT a try. If you are looking for one of the best BLT's in town, Dagwood's deserves a look. There is nothing special about their BLT. It is standard sandwich bread. The lettuce is iceberg. The tomatoes just your typical garden variety. The bacon is a nice thick cut with good flavor. So what makes this BLT worthy of competing for the best in the city? A half a pound of bacon! Granted you won't be able to eat one daily, but this BLT is worth straying from the diet on occasion. When I first read the menu I thought it would be too much bacon, but there ratio of lettuce, tomato, and bread is perfect for the over an inch of bacon piled on the sandwich. If you want some delicious diner food, Dagwood's is worth a try. If you are expecting Michelin Star food, keep driving.

Bow chooka bow wow! I just fell in love with the KC greasy spoon joint I have been searching for...for 3 years! The portions are HUGE. The food flies out of the window. My coffee never got below half a cup. Fast and friendly service. Just good home cooked breakfast. What more is there to look for in a greasy spoon? Do yourself a favor and order the biscuits and gravy. The damn thing is so big it comes out on 2 plates, and they break their neck getting it to you. I will be back again and again and again. This is my new spot for morning eats!!! LOVE THIS PLACE!

Not sure what all the hype is about. Came to eat here with my wife and 14 month old daughter. It was a pretty warm morning in July and it was about 10 degrees warmer inside the restaurant. Not a huge deal its a little greasy spoon diner and I can deal with the heat. Next, the food came out relatively quick, but it was lacking in flavor. The biscuits and gravy were just so so and the omelet we ordered was made with american cheese. Maybe I missed that in the menu, but who makes an omelet with american cheese??? In addition, our toast was DRENCHED in butter, I know it would have made Paula Dean happy(more butter pleeease), but I was not a fan. Won't be going back that's for sure. There are plenty of other breakfast and lunch spots within 5-10 miles with much better food and service.

Nice little breakfast/lunch gem. Small diner with pretty good food. My boyfriend and I both got the breakfast burrito with onions and green peppers added (he added jalapenos to his too)....my boyfriend also got the short stack of pancakes which tastes pretty good. Waitress was pleasant and checked on us several times during our meal. I'd definitely come back again for breakfast or brunch....probably will try the scrambler next time ^__^

As a life-long Kansas City-area resident and a big fan of greasy spoon diners, I have always felt bad that I've never actually eaten at Dagwood's before. I've had grease-drenched to-go sandwhiches during early-morning weekend shifts down the street once or twice, but that was years ago. On top of that, Southwest Boulevard comes to mind when tacos or margaritas are the subject of conversation - and as much as I love tequila for breakfast, heading down to the Boulevard @8am to get started on the Patron just doesn't seem like a recipe for a winning, jailtime-free day. Throw in the fact that my meat-eating days are behind me, and a place like Dagwood's gets harder and harder to schedule. I was thankful, then, to be given the keys to the breakfast choice a week or so back, and figured it was time to take the chance. I was joined by two other Dagwood first-timers (but no strangers to diner food) and we all came away pleased. First off, this little, unassuming building has been there for 80-ish years, so it's an institution. From the moment you walk in, to the brief wait for your food to make its way from the open kitchen to your table, being in Dagwood's is like a slice right out of small town Americana. Work trucks drive by outside. The sky is that early-day bright blue where you know you're going to get a ton of work done, thanks in no small part to the strong and constantly-refilled cup of coffee in front of you. This is also the type of place that makes weaker-willed vegetarians struggle with their life choices. If it weren't for the smug, holier-than-thou attitude that not eating meat affords me, I will admit I would be tempted by the offerings of chicken-fried steak, mounds of bacon, sausage, loaded omelettes, burgers, and various other roadside confort foods that have come to define the golden era of America in the past century. Those things are now such a part of our dietary lexicon that most people now think nothing of paying exorbitant prices for miniscule portions. While spots like Dagwoods tend to exist out on the interstate or buried deep in the countryside in rural farming communities, it's really great to know Kansas City has this little piece of Americana so near the city center. Between the three of us though, we settled on two giant veggie omelettes, hashbrowns, rye and texas toast, and a single, plate-sized pancake. Our waitress made sure everything was as we expected, while regulars passed in and out of the L-shaped dining area and were greeted as old friends. Some say businesses like this are aged like a fine wine, but I think in Dagwood's case it's more like a boxed wine: cheap and a little trashy, in a container you might be a little skittish to fully trust, but in the end you realize you're getting so much more for your dollar, you're even more buzzed for less of an investment than you would be surrounded by polished marble, LED TVs, or a waitstaff more interested in playing on their phones than being attentive to their tables. This is real food for real people who have better things to do with their day than subsidize a flashy marketing campaign or quibble about the difference between a scallion and a shallot. Here's to another 80 years!

Always wanted to try it. Stopped off for lunch and was very disappointed . Very dirty! Bathroom stinks and the waitress never came back after she dropped off my order. Food looked good but had no real taste.

First week in KC and needed a breakfast burrito. Paparico's was closed so on to KC's #8 rated. Burrito was good but not even in the same league as authentic Tex-Mex burritos. Served with Pace and just pretty bland. Sausage gravy was pretty good and my wife's Dagwood bkfst sandwich was delicious. Coffee was weak and guy serving water/coffee was straight outta hangover and needed to wash the automotive grease off his hands. Probably won't go back, definitely not for bkfst burrito.

As long as you know what to expect, you're going to like Dagwood's. And if you have eyeballs, you should know what to expect before you ever get out of the car. On the far Southwestern end of Southwest Boulevard lies a greasy spoon diner in a run down, light industrial neighborhood. The parking lot is in poor condition, and the giant trucks are probably taking up more than one spot. You might see a dive. I see the perfect place to get biscuits and gravy. I was awoken this morning by an impatient dog, a few hours before my alarm was to go off. As I stood in the park and watched the sun come up as the pooch sniffed patches of grass, I decided that I deserved an unhealthy breakfast. Wanting to broaden my typical horizons, I ran through my bookmarked businesses. I came across Dagwoods, recommended to me by a quite well known KC culinary figure. I assume any diner with that kind of klout is something I need to give a chance, and I'm glad I did. I ordered coffee and the biscuits and gravy special. For $6.95 I got a (still ridiculously huge) 1/2 order of B&G, hash browns, two eggs and bacon. It came out quickly...VERY quickly. Not that I'm complaining. Also, it was pretty frickin tasty! I mean, it's not the best I've ever had. But did you hear me mention that it came out fast and was less than seven dollars? Heck of a deal, if you ask me. The service was friendly, and the characters were colorful. The coffee was hot, and depending on your particular disposition, so was the waitress. This place is A-OK in my book.

I was super excited to eat at Dagwoods and we finally got up early enough to get breakfast. I paid 11 dollars for biscuits and gravy, bacon, hash browns and eggs. Had this plate been impressive, I would have had no problem with the price however the hash browns were like they had been left out all day and the eggs under cooked. Biscuits and gravy were alright. Definitely just sad about this experience.

Dagwood's is exactly what you would expect for a throw-back greasy spoon: Friendly service and amazing, greasy food. I went there solo on my last trip to Kansas City. I wanted a place to drink coffee and read. I got it. I ordered the biscuits and gravy plate. It was about 4 breakfasts in one. You can easily split this between two people. The food came in a flash and was great! Nothing out of the ordinary, but still tasty. Overall, I would definitely return.

I went for lunch with an open mind after reading about it in the Pitch. My lunch date and I got similar sandwiches - I got the Dagwood with Bacon, and the gravy on the side. Yum! Texas toast, cheese, hashbrowns, eggs, bacon... what's not to love!? He got the three meat sandwich COVERED in sausage gravy, and then almost licked the plate. I thought for a greasy spoon kind of place, it was great food. You can see them cooking, if you sit on the front side of the building. The staff was super-friendly and they seem to have regulars. It is definitely a place where there are people from the small businesses nearby who come often. While we were there for the first time, the server made us feel at home. I'll be back for the biscuits and gravy and/or the open faced roast beef.

Dagwood's is a no frills diner with good food and friendly service. I went for breakfast and my girlfriend ordered the breakfast burrito which was gigantic and also tasted great. I ordered the Dagwood sandwich (hashbrowns, egg, sausage, cheese, and gravy between two slices of bread) which was only 6 bucks and was everything I was looking for. The waitress was extremely friendly and our tab was under 20 bucks for both of us when it was all said and done!

A place you would expect to find on Diners, Drive Ins and Dives! Back to the basics here, all which are good. This is a stick to your ribs, working man's place to eat. When you stop at Strasser's for hardware, zip on over here for a quick lunch.

If you are looking for a quick, good, and cheap breakfast Dagwood's Cafe might be for you! Dagwoods is a local throw-back that is staffed with friendly individuals. There isn't much variety but what is available was pretty tasty. Just a fyi: most of the dishes don't come with too much salt, so you may have to add some if your tastebuds desire it. The decorations on the wall are also vintage and fun.

I've been to Dagwood's five Saturdays in a row now. Quick service and delicious breakfast. The sandwiches are yummy, but I keep getting the bacon breakfast burrito. It has every breakfast item I want in it and the price is right (5.49). I'm excited to go back for lunch, but the breakfast is so good that I can't bring myself to order on the other menu. Lots of people order carry out, so I might try that sometime. The location is nowhere near my house (435 and State Line), but I don't care. I make the drive. So so so good.

With all the emphasis on "greasy spoon," I have to point out some counter-traits: it is clean as a whistle, has great natural light, and is warmed by human kindness. And the food is perfect.

I've NEVER had a bad breakfast here. They do serve a lunch menu after 10:30 am, but I'm never there that late in the day. The chicken fried steak breakfast is the best. A country fried piece of steak with their creamy sausage gravy is heaven on a plate. They always make your eggs to order perfectly! Pecan pancakes are yummy also. Crispy edges and fluffy middle goes great with the syrup. Coffee is always topped off when you need it. Service is great. Perfect little "diner" for all your breakfast needs!

I have worked near this place for years and today was my first visit. I was hungry for breakfast and didn't want a microwave ready deal. I stopped in and ordered a BLT- the server was very friendly. My sandwich was ready for me in about 7 minutes and boy was it tastey and not skimpy at all! I will go back for lunch soon with a couple coworkers.

The best thing I can say is The best thing I can say is: "Try breakfast, maybe it's special, lunch sure isn't" Having gone back and tried the tenderloin, I have to say that I can't say that I can change my rating much. This time, I looked the somewhat friendly waitress in the eye when I asked if the tenderloin was made onsite. This time she told me, "No, it's frozen" On the upside: Hooray an honest answer, I can adjust my expectations. On the downside: a below average handmade tenderloin is better than a frozen one. The sandwich is okay. It helps when you're not expecting homemade. But it's not quite as good as the tenderloin at Culvers, so how can I go above two stars? On my last two bites, I wanted to have the PORK tenderloin sandwich side-by-side with the Chicken Fried STEAK, I'm not sure their from a different box in the freezer. I WANTED Dagwoods to live up to the hype of a classic hometown hole in the wall, but to do that, they gotta put more effort (any effort) into MAKING the food.

Food was good! However, I'm 6'2" and about 250, my twin 12 year old sons are about 5'10" and 200 and my skinny wife in a booth meant for four stick people made eating a circus act! Would do it again.

Dagwood's has all the requirements of a greasy spoon diner. Small and compact tables - check Fast and friendly service from one waitress serving the packed place - check Limited but filling menu of breakfast essentials - check Other than the coffee tasted weak, the rest of my breakfast was pretty dang good.. I had the Corned Beef Hash with eggs over hard or fried into oblivion. It was exactly as I figured it would be. Canned corned beef hash with a fried egg slapped on my plate. I would have preferred the hash cooked a bit crispier but heck mixed with the egg and some pepper it was all good. I don't think I left much on my plate. The waitress knows how to run the place quickly with a smile. My glass of water and mug of coffee weren't ever empty. I know I won't be a stranger for long. I see another breakfast visit in my future.

Great little diner. Perfect breakfast spot for my tastes. Super friendly and helpful waitress. I think her mom was cooking. If I lived in kc I probably would eat frequently. I think it's been there like 80 years almost .

This place is delicious! It is sort of tucked away under the highway so you would't know its there unless you were a local. It has a retro vibe with the low counter top and stools but very clean. We picked the chocolate chip pancakes and biscuits and gravy which were great. The service was also a plus. Our waitress never let the coffee go cold and was never too far away! The price was right too!

3.5 stars here! Good solid down home breakfast with nothing fancy. Very basic seating with plenty of locals eating which is always a good sign. Coffee was not very good but that is the only downfall. I had b&g special which was good and filling. Son had the chocolate chip pancake which he loved. Diner is warm. Not sure if air conditioner was working or just simply not on so dress appropriately. Friendly wait staff , good food and fair prices. I will be back!

If you're looking for a blue cheese burger and a side of truffle fries, you will want to keep driving. Dagwood's is a traditional greasy spoon ... unapologetic about being a place to go when you want a burger without all the bells and whistles. So far, I've only been to Dagwood's for lunch and it seems that most of their praises (and menu items) are dedicated to their breakfast ... but their lunch is no slouch either. Their burgers are huge with thick and juicy patties. They're not overly seasoned but they do have flavor. For $2.50 you can add fries, onion rings, or a mix of the two to create a "basket." Let's just say that, for well under $10 (with tip) you won't walk away hungry. Bottom line ... the service fast & friendly, the prices are reasonable and the food is pretty good. Besides, the place has a tradition that goes back more than 70 years. I'll be back for the breakfast.

First attempt to eat at Dagwoods was over the 2011 July 4th holiday weekend - they were closed. We return a few weeks ago and found exactly what I expected - It's a Diner vicariously close to a Dive. Typcial breakfast diner food and great service. I had a good combo of eggs and french toast. The french toast was exceptional and the egg as was not overcooked (issue for me). Amused to know that they had carryout service for the kind of restaurant they are. Not sure that it's a repeater due to the drive we had to make but good food, good value, good service.

This place is awesome if you're looking for some old school atmosphere, inexpensive + delicious food. They close kinda early (in my opinion) which is not super convenient for late risers like myself, but the Dagwood sandwich is to die for!

Like an after school special I was tempted to go here but I knew it was wrong. After much prodding and "you'd be a lot cooler if you did," I caved. Hipsters take note, this is your place. You can read unknown magazines and pretend you didn't bring them here for anyone to see or ask you about. And you can spend $4.00 on breakfast and keep it your little "secret." After working 12 hours you'd think I'd be grateful for anything, but clearly, I don't understand the subtle nuances of awful coffee and waitresses coughing all over my food. I guess you go here for a few reasons. 1. You are super low on cash and have to be seen somewhere or 2. You have a beastly hangover or 3. You are the afore mentioned hipster. Like any riveting conclusion to a 70's after school special. I learned my lesson (over and over again that day.)

I hadn't seen one of my besties in a while so we made a date to go hang out together one morning and we started off the Odyssey at Dagwoods. Now, I grew up in Rosedale many, many years ago, but, I have never, ever, been to Dagwood's Cafe. I've always wondered about it. Always thought it was a cool looking place tucked there close to the entrance to I-35 South. We were going to do some landscape shopping at a nursery about an hour and a half south of KC so, my bestie and I thought Dagwood's would be perfect to start out with breakfast. First of all, this place is a diner. Pure and simple. Some would call it a greazy spoon. Ok. Maybe so. I'm sort of attracted to these places and I'm not shy about it. You know the type. I'm the one who was always attracted to the more racier or rougher looking types. Just something kind of naughty and exciting about the whole thing. Ya know? No? Probably not. Okay, well, anyway...So, we walk into the joint and yes, it is a joint but it seemed pretty clean. It just looks like something out of the 1960s or at the latest, early 70s, and that in itself is kind of cool. The waitress was on us like white on rice. Very friendly, boisterous...I like that. The place was full of construction workers, old guys, old women, bikers, all kinds of different people, but mostly, just plain old working class people. I like that too. I ordered the meat lover's omelet which was an omelet stuffed with pieces of bacon, sausage and ham and a slice of American cheese halved into triangles and melted over it. Served with some rather dry hash browns (but they were crunchy!), some whole wheat toast and a cup of Joe. My bestie had biscuits and gravy with an egg and some sausage but I didn't taste it. The meal was acceptable in quality. Nothing to write home about. It was inexpensive. Yes, you can get much better food elsewhere but there really wasn't anything wrong with this either. It was an enjoyable atmosphere, with affable and attentive staff and decent prices. I'll take that any day. It made for a pleasant beginning to what turned out to be quite a boffo day. Yes, I will go back to Dagwood's.

It's old school here all the way. Since this place went no smoking it is much better than is previous years. The service is good and the people working here are all very nice though at sometimes a little spacey. I enjoy an off the menu item called the All-Meat Dagwood. The coffee is terrible but the food is all American greasy spoon. Lunch is also offered but breakfast is what I recommend.

***UPDATE*** I've been meaning to update this for a long long time now. Went back for a second visit a week or so after this first review. Stuck on the CFS (If you don't know, then you don't really ever eat breakfast) It's amazing!!! I've been going almost every Sunday since. There is never a wait, and the food is always just as good. It's never a "Oh, last week the food was better" kinda deal. Been going to breakfast restaurants in this city for quite some time now and I always try the new places and it just seems like nothing ever matches up. Not to mention, they are all a little too hoighty toighty for me anyhow. Places like Succotash, the food is great but is it worth the wait and putting up with all those people? No... *** First Impression*** So like the rest of you that spend anytime driving down SW Blvd you have seen the little diner-esque shack called Dagwoods Cafe. Having driven past that place many times I noticed the sign that says "Home of dagwoods famous breakfast sandwich" and me being the kinda guy that stops at any place that proclaims fame or greatness. I finally found a sunday morning to test the validity of this statement. I was pleasantly surprised by the quality of the sandwich, it was greasy, tasty, and had all the little perks I like in a breakfast sandwich. It was a bit small for my taste but somehow still filled me up till lunch. Comes in the standard bacon, sausage, ham. I had the sausage and it was much better then most breakfast places. The service was awesome and fast, the atmosphere is what you want out of a breakfast diner, the price was reasonable. My dagwood was around 6 bones... Coulda been cheaper.

well, i've only been driving past this place for 10 years or so, so i guess it was time i actually went inside. this is one of those places that time forgot, much like town topic, and you know before the smokeing ban went into effect, that this place was full of chain-smoking black coffee drinking folks just looking for some good food. my kid and i on the look out for something new had a delightful sunday afternoon breakfast and it was absolutely delicious. we may never go to IHOP, Denny's , or Waffle House again. the prices are about what you'd expect from one of those places, but then again way cheaper than the diner @ city market, the eggs and meats were well cooked, i got a waffle which was waffley and my kid got pancakes which he couldn't finish. all that for under 15 bucks, oh yup. needless to say we'll be back, i'm not sure their hours but it looked like a good divey place for a burger too. i didn't notice if they had pie. i will ask next time.

Been wondering about this place and one day decided to stop. Got the Dagwood breakfast sandwich and it was good. Breakfast sausage, fried egg, cheese, and hashbrowns on Texas toast. Went well with a cup of coffee. Overall, just a regular diner with a good breakfast sandwich.

Second visit. Had breakfast the first visit and it was perfectly good. Went for lunch today. Ordered the pork tenderloin sandwich with a combo side of fries and onion rings. Don't bother with either the fries or onion rings BUT do try the pork tenderloin. The food is served hot and the sandwich (which is big enough for two meals) is served with lettuce, tomato, onion, mayo, and fresh horseradish -- YUM. Probably one of the best pork tenderloin sandwiches I've had! Wait staff is excellent and extremely competent. If you have a hankering for a greasy spoon diner that knows how to make a solid pork tenderloin sandwich, this is the joint!

I've driven past Dagwood's for years and I finally decided one Sunday morning to stop and I'm glad I did. Dagwood's is a throwback diner. One full of characters, attitude and some really good food. I ordered the very generously sized half biscuit and gravy special that came with two eggs and then a side of bacon which I washed down with a Dr. Pepper. My tab was a hair over $10 plus the gentleman behind the counter filled up my drink in a cup to go. On top of it, I made friends with those around me. The couple to my right are regulars who said they actually met at the diner. They were mighty friendly, gave me some menu advice and clued me in on some of the history of the place. I can't wait to see them when I came back.
